Spiritualism – the religion that communicates with the dead – found one of its earliest and strongest footholds in Australia in Melbourne, which quickly became the movement’s national centre. Alfred Deakin was a well-known follower. From the late nineteenth century, séances, mediums and churches flourished across the city, making it a heartland of spirit communication. Within this story, the Brunswick Spiritual Lyceum Church stands out. It still operates as a active church.

BCHG is hosting a talk on Spiritualism in Brunswick by Professor Andrew Singleton from Deakin University. Andrew has presented and published extensively in these areas both nationally and internationally.

Professor Joan Beaumont will repeat her popular walk visiting places of significance in Brunswick during this turbulent period. The walk starts outside 61 Lydia Street - site of the Proletarian Hall - and ends near Jewell Station. The cost includes an explanatory booklet.

Book launch - New edition of It Happened in Brunswick by Les Barnes with revisions and additions by members of Brunswick Community History Group. This timeline history now covers up to 2020!
The book will be for sale at the launch and afterwards at Brunswick Bound bookshop. $40.

How does graffiti contribute to urban character and visual diversity in our cities? Can we reconcile issues of vandalism and private property with rights to participate in public spaces? Dr Sabina Andron will address some of the difficulties regarding community and municipal management of graffiti, and discuss ways forward through enhanced engagement.
The speaker is Dr Sabina Andron, research fellow in cities and urbanism at the University of Melbourne.

Sabina’s first monograph, Urban surfaces, graffiti, and the right to the city (Routledge 2024) was shortlisted for the Jane Jacobs Urban Communication Award. This year, Sabina received an Australian Research Council grant for the project “Visual governance in the city: rethinking graffiti and public images”.

James Nicolas has published a book on the Irish National Foresters Friendly Society. It was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and provided services to people of Irish descent. There was a branch in Brunswick so James will also talk about the Irish in Brunswick in general.
